Les Miserables - Let the People Sing

Seen @Leeds grand on 05/04/2025

Four amateur companies came together to create this all-singing, all-dancing and all-but-professional performance of what I consider to be the best musical of all time. The staging and choreography were superb, the acting and singing fantastic, and the story never fails to move me to tears at least twice. If I could give it six stars I would.

Six

Seen @Vaudeville Theatre, London on 07/09/2024

Six The Musical is written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss while studying at Cambridge University. The musical had it’s premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2017, and then went on to have a very short run at the Arts Theatre which was closed due to the COVID-19 Lockdown and then went to Lyric Theatre after Lockdown and finally to its forever home at the Vaudeville. It has had great success including multiple tours across the UK , North America , Australia and New Zealand with a second home on Broadway. Six tells the story of Henry V111 wives brought into the 21st century as a concert with impressive and fun pop songs. Some of the hits which have be heard over 100 million times include Heart of Stone, No Way, I don’t need your love, Don’t loose your head, All you wanna do, Six, Ex-Wives, Get Down, Haus of Holborn and the MEGASix. The cast included Nikki Bentley as Catherine of Aragon, Theo Therese Ngugen as Anne Boleyn, Kayleigh McKnight as Jane Seymour, Rena Oakley as Anne of Cleves, Hannah Lowther and Janiq Charles as Catherine Parr. The Ladies in Waiting were as follows Ella Ingram as Joan, Isis Dunthorne as Maria, Emma Jemima as Maggie and Kelly Morris as Bessie. Six the musical is a high energy show that is more than a pop concert, for me the outstanding performance of the night was Kayleigh McKnight’s vocals in Heart of stone, which made me very emotional, however all the queens and Ladies in Waiting are fabulous. I can definitely see that Six The Musical will continue it’s reign at the vaudeville theatre for many years to come, its no surprise that this show is a global phenomenon. If you are looking for a highly entertaining, music filled night at the theatre I would 100% recommend this show to you.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Seen @leeds playhouse on 18/09/2025

A superb production of a superb adaptation. Sorkin brilliantly preserves the narrative voice of Harper Lee's masterpiece, retaining the language of the original in a way that is shocking to modern ears but highly effective. As in the book, Scout, the daughter of a lawyer hired to defend a Black man falsely accused of raping a white girl, tells the story of the summer's events, though in the play she also has assistance from her brother Jem and their friend. The narrative is interwoven with scenes from the courtroom and around the neighbourhood which immerse us in the mood of a deep South still struggling - 70 years later - with the aftermath of the civil war. Watching this in the aftermath of the weekend's far right demonstration in London was unsettling to say the least. Sorkin brings Mockingbird bang up to date without changing a significant word or detail of the original. The sets are sumptuous, the characterisation superb (especially the family dynamics between the Finches) and the American accents (the downfall of so many productions) so flawless that it was a shock when one of the characters came on afterwards to deliver an appeal for funding in his own voice! Watch if you can!

A visit to a new little community theatre in Stannington near Sheffield. A good amateur cast performed The Vicar Of Dimbley very well. Only downside was the seats were all on one level so if there was someone big sat between you and the stage you could not see a lot.
